Red Bull headed into the Las Vegas GP with high expectations. Max Verstappen can potentially win his fourth consecutive world championship this weekend. However, the Austrian team is now looking to save face after a massive mistake.
The Las Vegas GP is one of the few night races on the F1 calendar. The star-studded race is a challenging track that provided exciting racing last year. Though, teams must bring in tweaks for their cars to meet the needs of the circuit.
Unfortunately, Red Bull might have missed the memo in this regard. The reigning world champions packed the wrong rear wing for the weekend in ‘Sin City.’ This one mistake could be detrimental to Max Verstappen‘s chances of winning the race on Sunday.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull in damage control at Las Vegas GP
Verstappen and Red Bull seemed prepared to win the 2024 drivers’ title this weekend. However, things have taken a sharp turn following the rear wing blunder. Dr. Helmut Marko even admitted that there was no way for Milton Keynes to send the right wing in time for the race.
It is believed that the RB20 is long up to six tenths on the straights due to the wrong wing set-up. Even a deficit of two-tenths per lap is a massive game changer in Formula 1. As such, Max Verstappen now faces the challenge of doing his best to ensure that he can still fight for victory this weekend.
For Red Bull, this mistake is a massive embarrassment. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport with hundreds of members working around the clock. All this hard work goes in vain when a wrong part is shipped for the weekend.
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have not blamed any staff members for this error. As Red Bull tries to cover up the mistake and get the most out of the car this weekend. On the other hand, rival teams would have been quite amused to see the reigning world champions hiding their faces. Although, it remains to be seen if Max Verstappen can win the 2024 title despite this last-minute setback.
