Fernando Alonso is the most experienced driver in Formula 1. The two-time world champion has shared the grid with multiple legends, including Michael Schumacher. F1 Pundit Rob Smedley highlighted that both drivers had multiple resemblances in terms of personality.
Michael Schumacher, much like Fernando Alonso was infamous for his hard racing and tough mentality while on the grid. Rob Smedley claimed that Alonso was similar Schumacher as both have had a reputation for being ‘arrogant’ and robotic. On the contrary, Smedley noted that the German was a wonderful and generous human being. The Briton further pointed out that the seven-time champion had humility in him, making him an even better driver.
Fernando is like Michael. Michael had this outside perception that he was arrogant, robotic and a terrible person, but he was actually a wonderful human being. He was very generous. He was humble. He had humility. He doubted himself, and that’s what made him become as great as he was. He knew he couldn’t do it without the team and he was generous with them.
Rob Smedley told DAZN’s DECOD3D
Smedley asserted that people had a wrong perception of Alonso as well. The 51-year-old believed that the Spaniard was not the same from the inside as people thought of him from the outside. The Briton iterated that the two-time world champion was a very ‘reserved character’.
What you see from the outside is not what you have inside. Fernando is a very reserved character.

Rob Smedley labels Fernando Alonso a ‘real asset’ to Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso recently landed a multi-year extension with Aston Martin despite struggling in performances. The Asturian could however exit the team as early as 2026 if Max Verstappen accepts the rumored $1.2 Million deal.

Speaking upon Alonso’s importance to Aston Martin, Rob Smedley insisted that the former wasn’t the same with the team during performances. The 43-year-old was ‘very competitive’ and a great asset to the team. Smedley further claimed that a team desperately needed the veteran on their team due to the latter’s tough and intense performances.
The personality you see is not the one you find in the team. Fernando is very competitive and a real asset to the team. He always wants to win, at any price. That makes him someone you want to have at your side. You desperately need him on your team because he is so tough and so intense that he infects people with that desire to be in front.
Rob Smedley noted
Aston Martin has already signed Adrian Newey for the 2025 season, though he wouldn’t directly work on the AMR25. The coming season could be extremely positive for the Silverstone-based constructor as they aim to join the front of the pack. Alonso will continue to dream of his third F1 title during his tenure at the British team.
