Max Verstappen has raced for Red Bull since 2016. During this period, the Dutch driver has established himself as an al-time great and won four consecutive world titles. However, former racing driver Robert Doornbos has hinted that Verstappen could soon leave Milton Keynes.

The four-time world champion is contracted to the Austrian team till the end of 2028. However, rumors did emerge that Max Verstappen could move to Mercedes courtesy of an exit clause. The Silver Arrows even expressed their interest in signing the Dutchman for 2026.

Doornbos claimed that Christian Horner will find it difficult to retain Max Verstappen after the 2025 season. The former Red Bull driver reckoned that Verstappen will not say anything different despite winning his fourth championship. As such, Robert Doornbos was convinced that the reigning world champion will leave Milton Keynes in 2026.

It will be difficult for Christian to keep Max on board. Did you expect him to say something different after winning a fourth world title? Believe me now: in 2026, he won’t be there.

Robert Doornbos said, as reported by PlanetF1

Max Verstappen could follow Lewis Hamilton in joining Mercedes

Doornbos recalled that Lewis Hamilton dominated the sport at Mercedes courtesy of its power unit advantage. The Silver Arrows did not have the best chassis but this deficit was covered up due to its engine. Subsequently, Robert Doornbos suggested that Verstappen might decide to join the Brackley-based squad, hoping for a repeat of the Turbo Hybrid era.

Lewis Hamilton did not have the best car aerodynamically and mechanically for seven years [at Mercedes]. They had a cannon of an engine. I think you need that in 2026.

Robert Doornbos stated

So far Max Verstappen has not expressed interest in leaving Red Bull for a rival team. The Dutchman has recently hinted at wanting to spend more time with his family. Thus fans would not be surprised if the reigning world champion decides to simply retire from the sport within the next few years.
