The 2024 driver’s world championship tussle is going down to the wire. Lando Norris is only 52 points behind Max Verstappen and will go gung-ho to cut down the deficit in the remaining six races. With the US GP slated to take place this week, the Ex-world champion Sebastian Vettel has given his take.

Sebastian Vettel was recently pushed to give his preference in the Max VerstappenLando Norris tussle and he chose Verstappen. The German feels that despite the hot pursuit of Norris, the Dutchman will manage to edge out the Brit.

Norris currently has the fastest car underneath him on the grid.

Interviewer: Who do you think is going to win the championship, Max or Lando?
Vettel: I hope it goes down to the wire, as a fan, yes. It’s great to watch. If it’s the closer it is, but, it is hard to say. But I think Max is the favorite and I think if I had to bet on, the one of the two today, it would be Max.

The German via his comments has, on one hand, acknowledged the fierce title fight between the two contenders. But, on the other hand, he has backed Verstappen to claim his fourth consecutive world championship. Interestingly, if the Red Bull driver manages to do so, he will equal Vettel’s four-consecutive titles record.

Max Verstappen will suddenly not have a ‘dominant car’ at COTA

While Sebastian Vettel has backed Max Verstappen to win the 2024 title, the latter is not hugely optimistic going into the US GP weekend. Red Bull has brought a huge upgrade around the floor area of the RB20 to the circuit.

But despite this, Verstappen is not expecting his car to dominate on the track.

I don’t think it will be completely different and we will suddenly have the most dominant car. We know the limitations we have with the car this year, but we are trying to make it better. Only at Monza did we find out what the main problems were. These upgrades are a result of the lessons we learnt from that.

Red Bull has had an extremely up-and-down 2024 F1 season. From winning the first seven races out of the first 10 to going winless in the next eight, the Verstappen-led team has been on a downward trajectory.

The US GP weekend could make or break their campaign for the remainder of the races. If the upgrades work well in COTA, it will put Verstappen and Sergio Perez in good stead going ahead into the season.
