The 2026 Formula One season will mark Sergio Perez’s return to the sport with Cadillac and since the announcing, the Mexican has been making bold statement’s regarding his poor final season with Red Bull that got him fired. Recently he has made another observation regarding being the teammate of four-time champion Max Verstappen.
On his most recent appearance on the podcast of Oswaldo Trava, the veteran admitted that he had a complicated time at Red Bull despite being in the best team and admitted that being the teammate Max Verstappen is the worst job there is HL. The challenge is clearly evident in the stats, as in the 90 races they were together, the Dutchman won 53 to the five wins of Sergio Perez.
I was on the best team but it was complicated because being Max’s teammate at Red Bull is the worst job there is in F1. I knew what I was up against.
Sergio Perez said via a podcast with Oswaldo Trava (espn.com).
The veteran then exposed the massive issue with the Red Bull team, as he pointed out that the whole RB garage saw him being faster than Verstappen an issue, creating a tense situation. When both the drivers have slower cars, things become messier than ever. He seems to imply the team didn’t want a challenging teammate for the number one driver.
At Red Bull everything was a problem; if I was faster than Max it was a problem, a very tense atmosphere was created; it was a problem if you were faster than Max. If you were too slow and Max was slow then everything was a problem.
Sergio Perez added.
The veteran racer pointed out that, Red Bull had a team on their hands capable of dominating the sport for a decade. But the poor management of driver, assets and other key personals destroyed everything. They missed the opportunity to dominate, as McLaren’s Lando Norris ended their four-year streak with a massive run in 2025.
We had the best team, unfortunately everything was destroyed. We had the team to have dominated the sport for the next 10 years, I think, and unfortunately it all ended.
Sergio Perez asserted.
Red Bull used Sergio Perez as a distraction to cover Christian Horner saga
In a separate podcast, Perez talked about the noise within Red Bull in his final years with the team and highlighted how his underwhelming run was used as a cover up. He highlighted how his mistakes were discussed in the media, while the team was in shambles over the drama involving sacked ex-team boss Christian Horner.

There was also so much pressure that year. Christian had some problems, so it [the performance] was also a bit of a distraction. I was a big distraction. Nobody was talking about anything but me, about my performance, about how badly I was doing.
Sergio Perez said.
The comments from Sergio Perez seems rational and controversial. It fuels the fire around the drama at Red Bull involving Christin Horner. It would be interesting to see if the veteran can prove the doubters wrong and that he failed at Red Bull because of the lack of support in the upcoming season.
