Red Bull faced significant challenges since the start of the 2024 season, with Christian Horner being involved with controversies that raised questions about team leadership. Additionally, the departure of Adrian Newey who was a key figure in technical success created further uncertainty. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff shared his views on Milton Keynes.

Toto Wolff in an interview stated that he and Max Verstappen‘s father Jos Verstappen shared a strong understanding and always had a good relationship. Wolff also mentioned his relationship with Helmut Marko, who is a key figure of the Red Bull squad, had improved in private over the past few years. However, Wolff and Christian Horner have never gotten along. As rivals, they often argue in interviews and trash-talk each other about their teams and drivers.

Jos Verstappen and I are on the same wavelength and have always had a good relationship. While with Helmut Marko I have gotten along well in private in recent years.

Further, Wolff noticed Helmut Marko seemed very upset because Red Bull is no longer the team it used to be. This was because of controversies within the team involving Christian Horner and female staff. Wolff reckoned, in the past Red Bull was known for developing young drivers and taking risks with new ideas. Now, the team has shifted its focus and style, which has affected its identity.

I see that he is struck by the fact that his team no longer has the identity it once had.

Toto Wolff claims decisions at Red Bull ‘made elsewhere’

Toto Wolff referred to the situation involving Christian Horner earlier this year. He stated Oliver Mintzlaff, who is managing director of Red Bull GmbH, was brought in to run the company smoothly and make tough decisions. However, Wolff reckoned the decisions were made by others instead of Mintzlaff. The Austrian billionaire thought this is affecting how Red Bull operates. Ultimately, making it difficult for everyone to know who is really in charge.

I thought Oliver Mintzlaff was hired to run the company with an iron fist. But it is clear that decisions are made elsewhere.

Toto Wolff highlighted that some people believed the situation with Christian Horner, accused of sexual assault by a female staff at Red Bull, should have been handled differently, but it didn’t. This showed, many expected a better response to this serious issue to avoid more controversy and keep the team stable. Instead, the way it had been managed has been insufficient, causing ongoing problems. Wolff believed that every uncertainty might stem from that starting issue, and Helmut Marko was not happy about it.

They thought that the Horner story should be handled differently, but this has not happened.

Certainly, Toto Wolff believed that other unknown personalities have made Red Bull’s decisions over time. Because of this uncertainty, Helmut Marko might be unhappy and feels the team is no longer like it used to be in the past.
