In Short
  • Max Verstappen has had a disappointing start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, with a best finish of P6 and a DNF at the Chinese GP.
  • Toto Wolff described Verstappen's situation as a "horror show," highlighting difficulties with the RB22 car during qualifying.
  • The new 2026 regulations pose unique challenges for drivers, particularly with the introduction of lift and coast strategies during qualifying sessions.

Max Verstappen has probably suffered from one of the most underwhelming starts to the 2026 season of Formula 1. The Dutchman had remained skeptical of the new regulations and the problems they would put forth. Now, Mercedes’ Team Principal, Toto Wolff, has made a shocking statement about Verstappen’s struggles with Milton Keynes.

Midway through the 2025 season, Max Verstappen was rumored to consider a switch to Mercedes. However, the Dutchman remained loyal to Red Bull for 2026 and suffered from major consequences. In the first two races, Verstappen’s best result is a P6 finish, with a DNF at the Chinese GP. Hence, Toto Wolff noted that the four-time champion’s current situation at Milton Keynes was nothing short of a horror show.

At the beginning of the Chinese GP, Max Verstappen fell to P16 in the pecking order following some issues during the race start. Toto Wolff boldly claimed that Verstappen was certainly in a horror show. He recalled the Qualifying performance for the 28-year-old in Shanghai. Wolff highlighted that the RB22 challenger was horrendous to drive.

Though Toto Wolff accepted that this was the situation with a majority of the team, barring Mercedes. Many of the teams were suffering from disappointing performances. However, Max Verstappen and Red Bull were in a completely different whirlwind of troubles. Despite promising results during the initial test sessions, they have been unable to start the season on a positive note.

I mean, Max is really in a horror show, When you look at the onboard that he had in qualifying yesterday, that is just horrendous to drive. And you can see that, but it’s not the same with many other teams.

Toto Wolff said, as reported by motorsport.com.

Toto Wolff reveals “difficult to cope and digest” factor for Max Verstappen

The 2026 regulations depict a never-before-seen challenge for drivers, especially during the Qualifying sessions. Notably, because of the newly introduced boost mode, drivers have to lift and coast during the qualifying. Toto Wolff accepts that this is definitely difficult to interpret for drivers like Max Verstappen, who always push to the limit.

Toto Wolff noted that it was bound to be difficult to cope with having to LiCo during Qualifying sessions. However, the Mercedes boss reckoned that this was more of a car-specific issue that he might be facing. Wolff boldly claimed that if Verstappen were to view the race as a spectator, he would enjoy the racing action at the forefront.

Clearly, lift and coast in qualifying, I’m sure for someone like Max, who is a full attack guy, it’s difficult to cope and digest. But it’s more, I would say, a car-specific issue that kind of magnifies the problem. Because if you sit in front of a TV or in front of a screen, even Max would say that was interesting racing in the front.

Toto Wolff noted.

The 2026 season is off to a rocky start, especially in terms of development for a majority of the teams. Red Bull might have to take a critical look at their problems and ensure that Max Verstappen doesn’t suffer from such issues anymore. After all, the four-time champion might simply quit racing in Formula 1 if he does not believe in Red Bull under the new regulations.
