Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has claimed that Mercedes’ uplift in performance over the past three races is credited to the team’s addition of new parts to the W15. The outfit showed strong pace and balance around Montreal and finished P3 and P4.
Mercedes has been the fourth-fastest team this season, with the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull appearing to be much faster than the Germans. But the Silver Arrows have shown that they can still fight to be at the very top after their performances in Imola, Monaco, and Montreal.
Toto Wolff said that developments along the lines of sections on the W15 that are not visible to the eye are what have worked wonders for the team. Wolff further asserted that visible changes are usually the talk of the lot, as was seen when the Brackley-based team opted for a newer front-wing design in Monaco.
The truth, over the last three races, we have brought so many new parts - visible and invisible - to the eye, that have contributed milliseconds to more performance. This is where those marginal gains then have that positive effect, and that's as a result of the huge effort of the factory, and so I think the wheel has started to get some real motion now.Toto Wolff via RacingNews365
In supplementation to their developments, Mercedes managed to start on pole for the first time in 20 races during the Canadian Grand Prix. However, the team failed to convert their spectacular start into a win amidst tricky conditions in Montreal, but despite the disappointment, they did manage to secure their first podium of the season.
Toto Wolff admits negative feeling for Mercedes after Canadian GP
Toto Wolff has admitted to feeling a bit negative about his team’s result despite one of their best weekends in Montreal. Wolff claims that Mercedes was much better than what was expected of them but missed out on some very crucial chances.
Three and four is much better than what we had in the last few races. Both drivers saw that more was up for grabs and we could have gained a position or two, so maybe that is why a negative sentiment remains.Toto Wolff told the Independant
Both drivers, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton, had moments of absolute brilliance during the 70-lap race in Montreal but fell victim to the changing weather conditions and misfiring strategies on a complicated afternoon for the team. Russell and Hamilton could have finished higher than third and fourth had they managed to capitalize on the opportunities they had during the race.
The result nonetheless comes as a positive verdict for Mercedes who will look to improve even more in the coming weeks. The upcoming race in Barcelona will test the team’s capability to dominate the highly aerodynamic and fast-paced circuit in search of podiums and points.
