The end of the 2024 season witnessed a controversial situation between Max Verstappen and George Russell. The argument had started after Russell reportedly pushed the stewards, causing Verstappen an unwanted penalty. The two drivers are yet to make up publicly as Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has distanced himself from the issues.

Toto Wolff has himself been the center of multiple controversies in 2024 and he didn’t want to add to it. The Austrian reckoned that George Russell had drawn a line after feeling disrespected by Max Verstappen. Wolff believed the issues were between the two drivers, and they were mature enough to keep it between them.

I think George has drawn a line. It’s a matter between the two drivers. It must remain one thing between the two of them and it must be managed by them.

Russell had declared that he stood united with Verstappen and the GPDA despite the petty on-track issues. Moreover, Wolff as a team principal couldn’t do much to solve the issues between the two. As a result, the 53-year-old highlighted that he didn’t need to involve himself at this stage.

I don’t think that as team principal of a team, at this stage, I should be involved.

Helmut Marko claimed the matter should ‘stay among the drivers’

The 2024 season is done with a long winter break to enjoy for the drivers. Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko resonated with Toto Wolff’s thoughts on fixing the issues. Marko claimed that the situation had ‘blown up’ too much than it should’ve. Subsequently, the 81-year-old pointed out that one driver needed to stick to the truth and have a discussion amongst themselves.

It has indeed blown up too much and it should actually stay among the drivers, But above all, one has to stick to the truth. I think this is basically maybe a discussion you should just have among yourselves.

The upcoming season will put forth some highly interesting and exciting situations for the teams and drivers on the grid. Verstappen had claimed he wouldn’t want to invite Russell for a game of padel in Monaco after the end of the season due to the issues. However, both drivers, at some point, will have to move on from their petty issues.
