What is Sergio Perez’s ethnicity?

Know all about Sergio Perez's country of origin and ethnicity as these have been called into question by Helmut Marko.

What is Sergio Perez’s ethnicity?

Sergio Perez’s controversy with Helmut Marko has blown up on the internet. The incident started because the octagenarian called Checo’s driving skills into question because of his ethnicity. Some Formula One fans are now more interested in his family background and ethnicity besides the Red Bull driver’s race pace. But it would be interesting to note that while Marko commented Sergio Perez‘s lack of speed is due to his being South American, he was factually incorrect.

Sergio Perez, born as Sergio Michael Pérez Mendoza, comes from Mexico. His birthplace is Guadalajara, the capital of the western state of Jaslico. It is famous for its tequila, a drink that took origin in the city. Now, Mexico lies towards the south of United States of America, so technically, Perez is a North American. While Helmut Marko brought up a very racist and dated opinion regarding Sergio Perez’s origin, he was also wrong in calling him a ‘South American’.

Although Perez indeed is a proud racer of color and also a Latin American, he is not a South American as Helmut Marko had claimed in his comment. Whatever be the Red Bull racer’s country of origin, it should not matter while looking over his results in Formula 1. Having stepped into the king class of motorsports in 2011, the now-33 year old has garnered a whopping 1420 career points with 34 podium wins. He has proven his mettle countless times, and thus he earned a seat at Red Bull at the end of the 2020 season.
