Lucas Blakeley is an Esports driver for the McLaren Shadow team racing in the Formula 1 Esports Series Pro Championship. Blakeley recently won the 2022 F1 Esports championship, while also propelling McLaren to the team’s title. However, this isn’t the first time, the Scottish driver has made headlines. As Blakeley had once surprisingly defeated the four-time-world champion, Sebastian Vettel at the Race of Champions.
Lucas Blakeley had qualified to be a part of the Esports All-Star team at the Race of Champions for 2022. And this gave the 21-year-old the chance to go head-to-head with Sebastian Vettel who was competing for Germany alongside Mick Schumacher. In a straight fight between Blakeley and Vettel, both driving the Olsbergs MSE-prepared RX2e electric rallycross car, on the same track with the same weather conditions. Lucas shocked the whole world as he timed in just under a tenth quicker than the German.
Sebastian Vettel had a time of 1:02:361, which was upped by the Esports sensation by 0.80 of a second. Lucas Blakeley made his mark on the racing world and proved to the critics that sim racing can be just as competitive as some of the best drivers in F1. Albeit the Scot’s All-Star team had to face defeat by the dominant Germans by the end of the day. It was still a major accomplishment to pull an upset on the most successful team in the history of the ROC.
