In recent weeks, rumors have emerged surrounding Aston Martin’s interest in Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver is yet to directly address such speculation. However, this could raise alarm bells for two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.

The Silverstone-based team is rumored to have offered Verstappen a whopping $1.2 billion deal. Though, the Red Bull driver is contracted to Red Bull till the end of 2028, things often take a surprise turn in the world of Formula 1.

Nevertheless, even if these rumors are false, Fernando Alonso might still lose sleep. With Lance Stroll essentially having a permanent place in the team courtesy of his father Lawrence Stroll. It is no secret that Aston Martin would love to have Max Verstappen. Moreover, Adrian Newey’s arrival to Silverstone could further entice the reigning world champion.

End of the road for Fernando Alonso?

Alonso is 43 years old. He is the most experienced driver in Formula 1. However, age has not taken a toll on the Spaniard’s incredible run of form so far. As such, the two-time world champion is in no hurry to hang up his racing gloves.

Though, if Max Verstappen does join Aston Martin, Alonso might not even get a choice to continue in Formula 1. Mercedes, Ferrari, or McLaren already have their plans set for the future without any real interest in the Spanish driver. Additionally, Red Bull might be reluctant to sign the 43-year-old as a short time measure to fill in for Verstappen either.

He might try to hold talks with Cadillac or Audi. Although, it is unlikely that the 43-year-old would want to once again resort to helping lay down the foundation of a new team. Fernando Alonso could certainly find a place outside Formula 1, perhaps Aston Martin’s Hypercar program itself.

For now, Alonso is set to continue his journey with Aston Martin in the hopes of fighting for the title next year. However, nothing is set in stone in the brutal world of Formula 1. As such, it remains to be seen how things pan out for the Spaniard in the coming season.
