John Cena made his long-awaited return to WWE earlier this month on the Netflix premiere of Raw. During his dazzling promo, the 47-year-old declared himself for the Royal Rumble match. He took the rumbling Intuit Dome on a ride and talked a big game about getting to that elusive 17th world title reign. But since then, he’s nowhere to be found on WWE television.
There’s a good reason for that. As per PWInsider, The Cenation Leader has been filming a movie named “Matchbox” in Budapest, Hungary. He was announced to lead the cast for it back in September itself. Consequently, the principal photography of the project has precluded the Peacemaker star from circling back to WWE for the rest of January.
Nonetheless, this Saturday, Cena will compete in the men’s Royal Rumble match. He’s one of the few men in WWE history to have won it multiple times. His last triumph in the coveted decades-old tradition came in 2013. John went on to headline WrestleMania 29 and beat The Rock for the WWE Championship. Cena’s fans would manifest for a repeat of those exploits this year.
2025 is going to be John’s last year as an active WWE Superstar. That said, The Franchise Player needs to make it count when he steps back into the squared circle. Even though he’s the odds-on favorite to win the Rumble match, the 16-time World Champion has to keep his head on the swivel.
There’s a long list of opponents, including Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, and more, who’ll be standing between Cena and his WrestleMania dreams. A previous report stated that WWE has plans to pit the Ricky Stanicky actor against Cody Rhodes at The Show of Shows in Las Vegas.
Fans criticize the underwhelming start to John Cena’s WWE farewell run
As much as the WWE Universe was excited to see John Cena kick off his retirement tour, they’ve met with nothing but disappointment thus far. After learning about the wrestling icon’s latest Hollywood venture, the netizens are mocking the wrestler-turned-actor for his false promises.

As evident by the comments below, a bunch of peeps are upset and even claiming that John scammed his wrestling audience to stick to his commitments on the movie set. Amidst the swarm of dejection, there were a handful of informed takes.
Some argued that since Cena has about 35 contracted dates with WWE, including live events, he’s not going to burn them on pre-Mania season. Despite all of that, the lack of build for him en route to the Royal Rumble screams that he’s not winning this weekend, said fans.
