Daniel Ricciardo ‘To Step Away’ from McLaren after Monaco GP

When Daniel Ricciardo joined McLaren for the 2021 Formula 1 season it was expected to be a foundation for the future title challenge. Yet his journey in the 5 Grand Prix have been far from smooth. To add above it all Ricciardo’s worst was on display in the Monaco GP, where his teammate Lando Norris showcased why exactly is he being considered the better driver.

At no stage of the weekend was Daniel Ricciardo even close to Norris’ performance level and come race day crossed the line in P12 while Norris made the podium for the second time this season. But instead of over-analysing the “anomaly” that was the 2021 Monaco GP, Ricciardo instead will step away and look to come back refreshed for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

I think the whole weekend was simply just a weekend to forget,” Daniel Ricciardo told Sky F1.

He added, “Obviously car four [Lando Norris] and the rest of the team got a podium, so I obviously want to congratulate them and they got it right. I don’t even know if it was we got it wrong, it just never really got going. We didn’t really do a crazy different set-up, the cars I want to say were nearly identical from a set-up point of view.”

Daniel Ricciardo also acknowledged that he has a lot to improve for the upcoming races, “I’m not trying to be too clever with that either, obviously I’ve got more to learn with this car than Lando, so I’m not trying to be different, trying to just follow suit and move forward with that.

“But just a strange weekend really from the get-go and one to forget. I think probably I’m not going to over-analyse this one, I think just forward for Baku and go from there.

“This year there has certainly been those races where it is like ‘yeah I’ve got to find a bit more but it will come’, I mean this weekend was more of an anomaly with such a big difference.”

Getting lapped [by Norris], might be the first time [by a team-mate], I don’t really know what to say. I will definitely look into it, but I think when it is a weekend like this and as far off as it was, probably best just to step away for a few days,” Daniel Ricciardo concluded.
