Alphonso Davies diagnosed with myocarditis- a heart condition, stops training with Bayern Munich
Alphonso Davies has temporarily stopped training with Bayern Munich after being diagnosed with mild myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.
The 21-year old Canadian has not played since December 17 after contracting COVID-19. The news has been confirmed by Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann during his latest press conference ahead of their match against FC Koln.

“During our follow-up examination that we do with every player that has had Covid-19, we detected signs of mild myocarditis,” said Nagelsmann.
“He has stopped training for now, so he won’t be available to us for the next weeks.”
Munich manager assures it “isn’t too dramatic”
“This myocarditis isn’t too dramatic based on the ultrasound, but more simply signs of an inflammation. Nevertheless, it needs to heal and that will no doubt take some time,” said Nagelsmann.
While the manager might assure that the disease is not that “dramatic”, Bayern Munich‘s campaign has surely been staggered by the news that Alphonso Davies will be absent for the foreseeable future.
Alphonso Davies has made 107 appearances for Bayern since signing from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018, helping them win three Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart that can be potentially fatal if not looked after and monitored, particular within athletes.
As such, Alphonso Davies will miss weeks of training as he is continually monitored by both doctors and the Bayern Munich medical team.
Further, Nine Bayern players tested positive at the start of January after time away following the Bundesliga’s winter break.
Bayern’s season so far
Bayern Munich has had a good season so far, both domestically and in Europe. The German giants are at the top of the Bundesliga with 43 points, 6 points clear of their arch-rivals Dortmund who are in second place.
In Europe, the Munich side dominated each and every team they faced, winning all 6 group stage games and advancing to the round of 16s comfortably. They face RB Salzburg in the Round of 16s of the UEFA Champions League which is scheduled to start on the third week of February.
