Barcelona poised to make a marquee signing in summer after securing a loan
The pandemic has not spared any club across Europe. Without fans, it has been a difficult year for clubs. None of the clubs are able to generate sufficient income without matchday revenue and merchandise sale. For a giant club like Barcelona, the bad transfer decisions haven’t helped their cause. The club has dived deep in debt, causing troubles to sign top quality players. However, according to recent reports, Barcelona have secured a big loan to fund the marquee signing in the summer transfer window.
According to the reports published in ESPN, Barcelona have secured a loan worth €500 million from an American bank which is expected to be used for various purposes. The Catalan giants are looking to utilise the funds for a summer marquee signing, outstanding payments and various release clauses. The club’s gross debt is at €1.2 billion barring the aforementioned support from the American bank.
What did Barcelona president, Joan Laporta said to media ahead of the business end of the season?
Facing the media, Joan Laporta was upbeat about the summer transfer window. He said that the club is all set to undergo a huge revolution in the upcoming summer transfer window. Joan Laporta said:
I said I’d review things with the team at the end of the season, in terms of how they played and the results, We won the Copa del Rey and are very proud of that, but we were knocked out of the Champions League very early on and threw away the league in an incomprehensible way in my point of view. From next week, you’ll see a series of decisions taken that need to be made and we’ll announce them. When I talk about it being the end of a cycle or renewals that are needed it’s because I think that’s what we need to do
Barcelona are linked with big names like Sergio Aguero, Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay who are available on the free transfer. The club president wants to build a club that can win the Champions League title in the upcoming years. A part of €500 million might be spent on signing Erling Braut Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer as well as handing a new contract for Lionel Messi.
Barcelona find themselves in the third position on the points table and are out of the title race after the club endured a horrific defeat against Celta Vigo over the weekend. Barcelona might stoop as low as fourth on the points table if Barcelona loses their final game and Sevilla registers a victory on Sunday in La Liga.
