Harry Maguire has played a vital role in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final. The Manchester United captain’s outstanding performance helped England reach its first tournament final in 55 years, re-establishing him as a world-class defender.

At the Euros, the center-back completed 100 percent of his dribbles and was one of the most at ease with the ball in the forward zones. Maguire was also seen connecting effectively with Luke Shaw on the left side, finding him with piercing balls in the left-flank, whether he is playing for Manchester United or England. Maguire also had an 89 percent passing accuracy in the opposing half at the Euros.

After his outstanding performances at Euro 2020, Jordan Pickford has been labeled one of the finest goalkeepers in the world. The Everton goalkeeper surrendered only two goals, tying Iker Casillas’ record for most clean sheets in a European Championship (5).

Pickford played every minute of the Three Lions’ journey to the final, putting an end to any questions about his claim to be the best goalkeeper in the world. Pickford also made two outstanding saves in the Finals penalty shootout, the second from Jorginho being particularly remarkable.

Andreas Christensen

Denmark were electrifying throughout the competition, and nearly every player deserves special mention, particularly Andreas Christensen, who has been outstanding in defense.

The Chelsea defender was coming off a Champions League victory when he entered the competition. His passing and tackling confidence has been near-perfect, enabling Denmark the power to hold off elite competition. Christensen’s brightest moment came in Denmark’s last group game against Russia when he scored the game-winning goal that sent them into the knockout stage.

John Stones

Throughout the tournament, England only allowed two goals, one of which came in open play. Stones, the ever-present defender who brought his Manchester City form to the international stage, played a big part in that.

Stones won 20 aerial battles, one less than Harry Maguire, and his 447 completed passes were second only to Jordi Alba (458) and clubmate Aymeric Laporte (458) among defenders in the tournament (644).
