Once called as a “darkhorse” ahead of any international tournament, Portugal are no more a darkhorse in the presence of Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruben Dias. The Portugal squad has the immense potential and here is the EURO 2020 Portugal Squad Preview ahead of the first major international tournament after the pandemic.

The Selecao defeated France in the finals of the previous Euro to end their drought in the international competitions. Despite not having Cristiano Ronaldo for most of the game, Portugal dominated the proceedings at Stade de France. In Euro 2020, Portugal will look to keep their long-standing record of reaching quarterfinals since 1996 intact. In the due process, they have reached the semi-finals thrice and even made it to the finals twice.

Ahead of Euro 2020, Portugal have a great squad at their disposal. They have Premier League’s record-breaking midfielder, Bruno Fernandes and “Premier League Player of the Season” awardee Ruben Dias in the defense. In Serie A, Cristiano Ronaldo was in great touch and his fine scoring form will be a cherry on top of the cake.

The Portugal squad is star-studded with the likes of Rui Patricio, the Wolverhampton Wanderers shot-stopper, Pepe and Joao Cancelo who had one of the best seasons in the respective leagues. The team is also stacked up in the midfield with Wolves’ star midfielders, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.

Portugal are placed in a “Group of Death” which contains the likes of France, Germany and Hungary. Only three teams can proceed from the group stage and will face a tough fight from France who were heartbroken last time in the finals. Also, Joachim Low is featuring in his last few games for Germany as he is set to depart after the Euro 2020. Though Hungary is a weaker side on paper, they can spring surprises as well. The Selecao are set to start their campaign against Hungary in Budapest on June 15th.

If Portugal are successful in winning Group F, they will face the third-placed side from Group A or B or C in Bucharest. Or else, they will have to travel to London to face the game against Group D winners in Round of 16.

Portugal Chances at EURO 2020

Portugal are one of the strongest sides going to the EURO 2020. They look dangerous in attack with Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota at their disposal. They also have sensational talent, Joao Felix, who has just won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid. However, they are placed in the Group of Death and can be cause of concern if they start the campaign slow. If they qualify for the knockouts, they can go all the way.
