Di Lorenzo, a versatile defender, primarily plays as a right-back, but is also suited to play on the left or as a centre-back, as and when required.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who turns 28 next month, joined Napoli from Serie A minnows Empoli in the summer of 2019 for €8 million. Di Lorenzo largely impressed during the 2020-21 season, as he made 49 competitive appearances for SSC Napoli, notching up four goals and eight assists to his name throughout the course of the season, also providing crucial defensive aid at the back at the same time.

Di Lorenzo was part of the Italy squad for this summer’s UEFA Euro 2020 and massively impressed for his nation throughout the tournament, quite rightly filling in at right-back for the injured but experienced campaigner Alessandro Florenzi, as he took his tally up to 13 senior caps for the Azzurris.

Di Lorenzo made six appearances in the European Championships, as Italy went onto lift the prestigious trophy for a second time after a draught of 53 years. Italy maintained all clean sheets in group stage and conceded only four goals, and Di Lorenzo had a significant contribution to that.

Likewise, he had caught the eyes of many top teams over the world, with Manchester United showing the most interest in securing his services. It was even reported that Manchester United were willing to pay €20m for the defender, if they found Di Lorenzo suitable to play in the Premier League. However, Di Lorenzo has now put an end to such speculations by signing a long term contract with Napoli.

Di Lorenzo had spent most of his career in the lower divisions of Italian League, only making his Serie A debut when Empoli gained promotion to the Italian top flight in the 2018-19 campaign.
