Manchester City host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal on Wednesday evening with the tie delicately poised at 1-1. In last weekโs first leg, City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne scored a stunner from a distance to equalize after Vinicius Jrโs equally brilliant curling strike from the edge of the area had put Madrid ahead at half-time.
Cityโs home advantage and red-hot form make them slight favorites, but Madridโs Champions League pedigree is second-to-none and they have made comebacks and unlikely wins their specialty in recent years. City, unbeaten since early February, is looking to win their first Champions League title while defending champions Madrid are looking to make it a record-extending 15 titles this year.
The winners of the clash will be favorites to beat Inter Milan the June 10 in Istanbul, Turkey after they thrashed their city rivals 3-0 on aggregate. The Cityzens are seven games behind to clinch a potential treble provided they win all their next matches.
What is Man Cityโs best Champions League finish?

City first competed in the Champions League during the 2011/12 season and has been in the main part of the competition ever since. In their first two campaigns, they didnโt make it out of the group stage. Then in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns, Man City came up against Barcelona in the last 16 and progressed no further. The 2015/16 season saw the Citizens progress as far as ever when they made it to the semi-finals against Real Madrid.
However, they failed to score over either leg and crashed out after a 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu. The appointment of Pep Guardiola as manager made things better for the Sky Blues. During the Spaniardโs first season, City encountered a brilliant Monaco side that contained Kylian Mbappe and Bernardo Silva and the Cityzens went out on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate draw over both legs.
The following three seasons saw dramatic defeats to Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspurs and Lyon all in the last eight. However, during the 2020/21 campaign City made it all the way to the final. However, it ended in a 1-0 victory for Chelsea. Last season they looked set to make it to the final again, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Real, and they will hope this is the year everything changes.
How many Champions League titles has Manchester City won?

Manchester City’s quest to win the Champions League was ended last year as they were beaten by Real Madrid in remarkable circumstances in the semifinals. Pep Guardiola’s side had seemed set to reach a second final in succession after taking a 5-3 aggregate lead, but Madrid forced extra time through two extremely late goals from Rodrygo before a penalty from Karim Benzema proved decisive.
Despite tasting so much glory in England, including a 100-point Premier League campaign and a domestic treble, City is still missing the final piece of the major trophy puzzle. In 2022/23, Guardiola’s side is now on course to set up a semifinal meeting with Real Madrid which ended in a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Bernabeu. They will hope things to be better at their home ground.
