‘I’ll knock them down’ — Liverpool boss calls out critics of Trent Alexander’s defensive capability

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has responded to critics of Trent Alexander-Arnold following his side’s win at Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Liverpool registered a very convincing 2-0 win over Arteta’s in-form Arsenal at Emirates with goals from Diogo Jota and Liverpool.

Although Arsenal failed to score during the game, Martinelli proved to be a constant threat to the Reds’ defence and often got the better of the right full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 23-year old England international’s attacking qualities are without question, yet there have been critics suggesting he is not the side’s strongest defensive-minded player.

Following the 23-year-old’s dazzling display against the Gunners, Jurgen Klopp hit back at his critics, insisting he ‘will knock them down.’ The German also hailed Alexander-Arnold for coming up against Gabriel Martinelli, who he had previously praised following their FA Cup tie in January.

“Apart from the diagonal balls to Martinelli, which Trent defended incredibly — Martinelli is such a talented boy — it’s really tricky,” Klopp told Skysports after Wednesday night’s match.

“If anybody says to me Trent cannot defend, they should come to me, I’ll knock them down. Honestly, I cannot hear that anymore. I don’t know what the boy has to do!

“Obviously, both teams had spells of possession where the other team was patient and didn’t want to step out, but we had to.

“Trent did exceptionally well against Gabriel Martinelli.”

Garry Neville considers Liverpool favourites to win the Premier League

Liverpool has been on an unbelievable run and with Manchester City dropping points against Crystal Palace earlier this week, the Reds are undoubtedly the favourites to win the league.

After what was an emphatic win against the Gunners, Garry Neville told Sky Sports that he thinks Liverpool are favourites for the title.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, Sky Sports pundit Neville said:

“You’re in every competition, you’ve won the Carabao Cup, you’ve got five players up front who can win you any single game, you’ve got a great back four, you’ve got a great goalkeeper, the experience in midfield in Thiago, Fabinho and Henderson is enormous with Milner and obviously others to come in so there’s a lot to say that Liverpool could be, for the first time, be favourites I think for the title.

“And that’s a big statement from me because I’ve said Manchester City all the way through, but what I saw on Monday night has just happened a couple of times this season, not too many. Liverpool have only not scored once, Manchester City have failed to score four times in games and that could just be the difference at the end. It may not be, because Pep Guardiola is a genius of a manager and he could see them home, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this Liverpool team won the title.”
