Netherlands became the first from group C and the third team overall to secure a qualification berth for the knockout rounds of this summer’s Euro 2020, after edging Austria for a 2-0 win. Netherlands went ahead when Alaba fouled Denzel Dumbfries in the box for a penalty, with Memphis Depay coolly slotting the set piece to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead at the 11th minute mark. Though the Oranje kept in pushing, they couldn’t find another in the first half. Austria looked the better team in the second half, playing with far more composure but couldn’t create the required chances and Denzel Dumbfries eventually sealed the win for the Dutch, which saw them qualify for the Round of 16.

Austria

Daniel Bachmann – 6/10

Tried his best to keep Austria in the game. Saved an attempt from De Jong and a fine shot from De Ligt, however couldn’t have done more to save the penalty.

Stephan Lainer – 4.5/10

Martin Hinteregger – 5.5/10

Andreas Ulmer – 5/10

One of the better Austrian players on the night. Tried hard to keep the midfield from getting overrun now and then, working tirelessly but without any fruition.

Konrad Laimer – 5/10

David Alaba – 4.5/10

Far from a decent performance. Couldn’t do much to negate Depay’s threat throughout the match, made a silly challenge giving away the penalty early that lead to Netherlands’ first goal and got booked too.

Was almost everywhere when needed and put up a great performance. Drew a foul from Alaba for the penalty early on from which Depay gave the lead and made a good run into the box to find himself at the end of Malen’s square ball to score.

Matthijs de Ligt – 7/10

Frenkie De Jong

An overall excellent performance from the midfield maestro. Did everything from carrying the ball forward with the beautiful runs, skipping through challenges and winning fifty-fifty balls. Everywhere on the pitch.

Wout Weghorst – 7/10

Memphis Depay – 7.5/10

Depay

Scored the penalty early on to put his team ahead. Didn’t look in his usual best as he missed some chances to double the lead, though he did work hard in the final third.

Substitutes:

Ryan Gravenberch – N/A

Owen Wijndal – 5/10

Came on and provided the pace and guile which Netherlands lacked in their attack. Made a beautiful run into the box and could have scored himself but squared it for Dumbfries to double their lead, notching up an assist.

Nathan Ake – 5.5/10
