Antony is one of the worst signings Manchester United have made in the past year. The Brazilian winger has managed only nine goals and four assists in 73 appearances for United. Despite being purchased for close to €100 million, he has not lived up to his price tag and is considered a flop. In fact, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team had scouted him, they valued him at €30 million. 

In the ongoing season Antony has managed only one goal and assist in 29 appearances, losing his spot at the right wing. He has not been dropped from the United team, holding the bench for rising star Alejandro Garnacho.

No longer a starter, last starting in the league against Nottingham Forest on 30th December, Antony wants to fight for his spot. He has the backing of Erik Ten Hag, who had pushed for his signing. The 24-year-old is determined to show that he belongs at Manchester United and will put in the effort to prove his spot.

Unfortunately, his efforts will only be seen if Ten Hag is still at the club. The Dutchman is on thin ice, with the Red Devils out of all European competitions and struggling to qualify for the Champions League. There have been reports of him losing the dressing room as well, meaning he is closer to losing his job as the Manchester United manager. 

Antony’s domestic abuse case still under investigation  

Early in the season, Antony was accused of domestic abuse by his former partner, Gabriela Cavallin. He had taken a special leave to deal with the investigation and was also dropped from the Brazilian National Team as well.

Once Antony returned back, many presumed the case was dropped, but it has now been reported by The Athletic that he is still under investigation. Both Brazilian and English authorities are still investigating him. 

He was accused by Cavallin of assaulting her on three different occasions, including the time she was pregnant. Another woman, Rayssa de Freitas, also claimed she was assaulted by the United winger. 

United are currently 6th in the league, 6 points behind Tottenham Hotspur. They have managed to regain some form, beating Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton recently, but still haven’t breached the top five. United currently look at a possibility of playing in the Europa League in the next season as well.
