47k fans: North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham women sets new WSL attendance record

A crowd of 47,367 spectators watched Arsenal thrash Tottenham 4-0 on Saturday, breaking the previous Women’s Super League attendance record established at the same match. The Gunners won easily thanks to goals from Beth Mead, Rafaelle, and Vivianne Miedema, who scored twice.

The number is greatly above the 38,262 milestone set at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November 2019 for the WSL’s maiden north London derby, shattering the previous WSL attendance record. Arsenal won that match by a score of 2-0.

Although Arsenal had sold 53,757 tickets for the match on Saturday, the game fell just short of breaking the record for the most spectators ever at a domestic women’s club match in England, which still belongs to the estimated 53,000 who watched Dick, Kerr Ladies play St. Helens at Goodison Park on Boxing Day in 1920.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall has highlighted the importance of the 50,000 tickets for Saturday’s north London derby being sold as opposed to given away, demonstrating the growing sustainability of the women’s game.

“Remember it’s 50,000 sold tickets,” said Eidevall. “It’s not giveaways, it’s not sold for a discounted price; it’s sold tickets. “I think that’s really, really special because that means doing this, the way the club has done it, it’s sustainable. It shows that the interest there is for real.”

“The investment that we as a team, the club has done, but also the past generations, the teams before us have done to put us onto this stage here, that’s phenomenal. We feel that, and of course we want to go out, and we want to make the most of it so it can happen again more frequently.”
