“A finished club with a finished captain” – Twitter goes bonkers after Harry Maguire remains the Manchester United captain under Erik ten Hag

Harry Maguire will remain Manchester United captain for the 2022/23 season, according to new manager Erik ten Hag, and fans are outraged. Maguire may be the most expensive defender in the world, but he was also the target of harsh criticism last season for a string of poor performances.

Many thought he was unworthy of being the club captain as United fell to sixth in the Premier League table and had their worst season in terms of points in the competition’s history.

The arrival of Ten Hag was supposed to mark the end of an era, but by electing Maguire as captain, Manchester United fans are already feeling a sense of déjà vu before the first ball is even kicked in the club’s first pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Tuesday.

Here are some reactions from Manchester as well as rival fans over Maguire still being the Red Devils’ captain even though exhibiting incompetence last season:

Indeed, many supporters are outraged that the positive energy that the Dutchman brought when his arrival was announced has vanished within weeks. The club has failed to sign major transfer targets, there is ongoing uncertainty about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, and now Maguire has been named captain.

That has been reflected in many fans’ reactions on social media to what they perceive to be the latest setback in Ten Hag’s tenure as manager.

Erik ten Hag claims Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United amidst transfer rumours

There has been a lot of uncertainty revolving around Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United since his statements about wanting to leave Manchester United. His agent, Jorge Mendes has been reportedly talking to various clubs to sign the Portuguese.

However, Manchester United boss, Eric ten Hag has provided fresh updates on the Portuguese. Speaking in a press conference as reported by Fabrizio Romano, Eric ten Hag said, “I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo before this issue came up. I had a good conversation with him. He hasn’t told me that he wants to leave… I have read. We want success together.”

He also said, “What I said before, once again, I had a really good talk together. No, we are planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season and that’s it and I’m looking forward to working with him. I have read but what I say is Cristiano is not for sale, he is in our plans.”
