Andre Onana, the new signing was flustered with the casual defending of Harry Maguire as he had already conceded twice on his debut for his new club. Onana made his move to Manchester United for €55m, making him the third most expensive goalkeeper of all time.
While giving his post-match interview, he was compared to United Legend Peter Schmeichel, berating his defenders. “When I’m in the goal, I demand a lot from everyone, and I start from myself. I try to demand a lot. As I know, he is a good player, one of the captains. He is good with the ball,” Onana replied. Clearly marking out his expectations of Maguire has set fans appreciating his stern behavior.
While Maguire‘s mistake did not cause United an immediate goal, it’s the tone pre-season games set for the rest of the season. Many fans are happy with the leadership shown by the young keeper. As Onana said, “He is a great person and a great player; I have a great relationship with him.”
The Champions League runner-up is an exciting keeper to keep an eye on. If not for his significant saves, the Final would’ve been decided before Rodri’s strike earlier this year. Will he follow Schmeichel’s legacy or De Gea’s? The upcoming season must give the fans a great insight into it.
The only third African goalkeeper to feature in a UCL final
Manchester United’s Andre Onana is only the third African goalkeeper to play in a European Cup final. He joins an elite list of two goalkeepers who have already won the crown. The 27-year-old goalkeeper from Cameroon joined the Italian giants, Inter Milan, last season. He was sensational at the back for the Nerrazurri last season.
With nine clean sheets and 45 saves in 13 UEFA Champions League appearances, the highest last season, he took Inter Milan to the final of the UEFA Champions League. It was a bitter loss where he failed to prevent Manchester City’s maiden UCL victory and historic treble.
The two other African goalkeepers have played in a European final before Andre Onana. Former Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar and Chelsea’s former goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Both players led their sides to European glories in the respective finals, and funnily enough, Mendy’s UCL coming against City.
