Angel Di Maria has announced his will to retire from the Argentina National Team after the Copa America in 2024. This marks the end of an illustrious International career by the Argentinian that has spanned over 15 years.
In an interview with Todo Pasa, Angel Di Maria confirmed the news of retirement stating, “I will leave Argentina national team after Copa América — it’s over for me.” Less than a year ago Di Maria played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup success, scoring in the finals against France. Now, the 35-year-old has decided to call it a day and is set to retire from the National Team after the Copa America in 2024, which will be held in the United States of America.
In his interview, Di Maria spoke fondly of his Argentine compatriot and friend, Lionel Messi. “I hugged Messi at PSG and told him: the only thing I’m grateful for is to have been able to play with you in a club, to be able to see you every day”, Di Maria revealed. The two have achieved everything at the International level together, starting with Argentina’s Copa America in 2021, the Nation’s first in 28 years. Followed by winning the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, the two achieved their life’s greatest achievement together in Qatar as the duo lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, both reduced to tears upon realizing the magnitude of their success.
