“You are a great player!”- Antoine Griezmann consoles Joshua Kimmich after Germany’s exit from 2022 FIFA World Cup
After Germany was eliminated from the World Cup group stage, Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich stated he felt “afraid” and described it as the worst day of his career. Germany’s World Cup run got off to the worst possible start when they fell to Japan 2-1 in their opening game.
They did, however, have a chance to advance after drawing against Spain and the Japanese losing to Costa Rica on matchday two. While they did their part, beating Costa Rica 4-2, Japan rallied from behind to upset Spain 2-1, throwing Germany out of the competition.
“For me personally, this is the worst day of my career,” he grieved following Germany’s elimination. ‘I’m afraid I’ll fall into a hole. It makes you think, these failures are connected to my person. We messed up in 2018, then we blew up the Euros last year.” Antoine Griezmann, who is having an incredible season with France, sent a word of encouragement to the Bayern Munich star on Twitter. “You are a great player! You will be back soon Joshua.” he tweeted.

This is quite a crucial moment for German football after consecutive World Cup group-stage exit
Kimmich is having mental difficulties as a result of his country’s failure to go past the World Cup group stage for the second consecutive year. As he previously stated, Germany’s performance at Euro 2020 was also incredibly disappointing, as they were able to win just one game throughout the group stage before falling to England in the initial knockout round.
Germany’s early exit is now considered a ‘new low’ for the 4-time World champions. Changes would certainly be made by either exclusion of old players from the team or firing coach Hansi Flick who has underperformed with highly talented group during his tenure. It is rumoured that DFB will hold a crisis meeting after the team returns back to Germany. A significant improvement is planned for Euro 2024, particularly on home soil as hosts.
