FC Barcelona president Joan Laporte has always favored the Super League. Despite all the legal barriers, Laporte has even predicted that the tournament will start in 2025. The concept of the Super League was proposed by Real Madrid president Fiorentino Perez and was constantly backed by clubs like FC Barcelona, Juventus, and further on.

The association argued against FIFA and UEFA over operating an “unfair monopoly”. FIFA banned the clubs from playing in alternative tournaments, such as the Super League, as the clubs were threatened by their respective leagues to be discontinued playing domestic football. In December, the European Court of Justice declared that UEFA and FIFA rules were not disrupting any EU laws.

While speaking to the Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Joan Laporte revealed that he was expecting the Super League to begin in 2025. “I think there will be a Super League. In March we will have the ruling of the EU Court of Justice. Yesterday was an opinion of the judge, the full sentence is not coming until next spring.” says Laporte.

Laporte also insisted on UEFA and FIFA supporting their initiative to compete with the Premier League clubs. The Catalan president seemed very optimistic while talking about the future of this competition.

Which clubs are still supporting the Super League?

Currently, only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Juventus are the candidates who favor competing in the Super League. There were more than 12 clubs on the roster when the competition was proposed. Clubs like Manchester United and others backed out of the deal. Despite having just a minority of clubs on their side, the Super League board is confident of pulling off the deal by the time the EU verdict comes out.

The European Super League is a commercial establishment made to create competition against the UEFA Champions League. The introduction of the ESL did not go as planned after they faced a backlash against the idea of having a league for the “elites“. After such a reaction, nine out of the twelve clubs involved backed out.

The participating teams were threatened with being disqualified from UEFA competitions in 2021, due to which most of the top-flight football clubs had to take a step back. Do you think the European Super League can benefit the world of football?
