FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have ‘ruled’ Spanish football for several decades. The two have battled it out, be it on or off the pitch in recent years. However, the club from Madrid find themselves in a much better position overall compared to their ‘counterpart’. However, a recent report by sports media platform Relevo reveals that the view of Real Madrid and that of seeing Barcelona as ‘rivals’ has changed.
Barcelona are currently third in La Liga and ten points behind table toppers Real Madrid. The Los Blancos look all the stronger and equipped to snatch the title from Barcelona this season. At Barcelona however, things have gone from bad to worse. With all the commotion, it is reported that Real Madrid no longer considers Barcelona as a direct rival.
Be it in the transfer market or from a sporting perspective, the club have fallen behind Madrid. A recent example is the deal of Arda Guler, who picked Real Madrid over Barcà. Looking back at Dani Carvajal‘s comment that Real will get the better of Barcelona in official competition, the same is now true.
“Leave them alone, they have enough problems of their own“, is what ‘they say in Madrid’, as per Relevo.
Villarreal make ‘second’ comeback to ‘end’ Barcelona’s title hopes
FC Barcelona find themselves in need of a new manager come the end of the 2023/24 season. Barcelona legend and current manager Xavi announced that he will leave the club at the end of his contract. Xavi had to say this as he announced the date of his departure:
As a Culer, I can't allow the current situation. It needs to change.Xavi said
As for the game itself, Barcelona went behind thanks to Gerard Moreno and Ilias Akhomach. Ilkay Gundogan initiated the Barcelona comeback with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box. Pedri then followed up with a similar finish from an identical position. The club then went ahead through an own goal from Eric Bailly, all within the space of 11 minutes.
However, Villarreal drew level yet again through Goncalo Guedes’ thunderous strike on the counter. To make things worse, a defensive disaster saw the ball fall invitingly to Alexander Sorloth, who made no mistake to score. In a late counter, Villarreal made it 5-3 on the night to effectively ‘end’ Barcelona’s chances of defending their La Liga title. The club have 44 points have 21 games.
