Barcelona threaten legal action over Frenkie de Jong contract

According to reports, Barcelona has informed Frenkie de Jong that they wish to void his current contract and reinstate the conditions he agreed to in 2019.

De Jong, who is estimated by Transfermarkt to be worth £54 million, received a massive two-year deal from former Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu, which is expected to bring in about £16.8 million this season and an additional £21 million the following season.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Barca is using “proof of crime” as justification to void the Dutchman’s record-breaking agreement. This is only the most recent in a string of events this summer between Barca and De Jong.

Although the Catalan club is in dire financial problems, they have spent heavily this summer, bringing in players like Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, and Robert Lewandowski for a total of £137 million in transfer fees.

That doesn’t even account for their enormous salaries, and paradoxically, La Liga won’t even permit Barcelona to enroll their new additions until they’ve significantly lowered their current salary cost.

So it appears that the Blaugrana are going over and above to satisfy the league’s requirements, starting with either kicking De Jong out the door or demanding that he forego his salary.

It appears that they would like to just remove him off the books. De Jong’s ambition for Champions League play is giving them problems, though, since a £63 million deal with Manchester United was derailed last month as a result of his European demands.

Chelsea is still interested, although it’s thought that interest is less serious now than it was a few weeks ago. The fact that Barca owes De Jong £17 million in back pay for past-due salary further complicates the picture.

Due to the fact that De Jong does not appear particularly inclined to leave the city, the Barca board has attempted to increase stress on the Dutchman by threatening legal action over his present contract.

The club informed the player in a letter dated July 15 that they had discovered “proof of crime on behalf of the individuals that signed his extension” back in 2020, according to the Athletic citing the Daily Mail.

They then explained that De Jong should agree to return to his prior conditions in light of these findings if he didn’t, they could be able to file a criminal complaint.
