While the happy team of Portugal celebrated after their 6-1 victory over Switzerland, Cristiano Ronaldo headed straight for the tunnel after the final whistle. He’d come off the bench late in the victory over Switzerland that progressed them into the quarterfinals. The Portuguese star’s 21-year-old replacement G. Ramos scored a hat trick in the winning performance that will surely put questions on the coach to decide between the two.

The legend congratulated Goncalo Ramos at midfield at the end of the game, then walked toward the Portuguese section of fans and clapped for them briefly. Still, as the rest of the squad was having a blast with the fan interaction, the Portuguese decided to leave his teammates behind and walked off alone through the tunnel; it seemed like nothing new to feel for the great man. Fernando Santos expressed frustration with his 37-year-old star the day before the controversial decision to drop him from the starting lineup.

Santos said the decision was strategic and not disciplinary, but he’d acknowledged he was bothered by the star’s bad attitude after he was subbed off, late in a 2-1 loss to South Korea in the final game of group play. Santos said, “I think those issues have been solved. I said that in my last press conference and I repeat myself: This is something which is finished, solved. I have a very close relationship with (Ronaldo). I have known him since he was 19 years old in Sporting,”.

“I think Ronaldo and I never misinterpret the human and personal aspect with that of manager and player, and what we need to do during the match,” furthered the coach. “That is what we will do. I will always consider him a very important player on the team,”. Although the Portuguese great has scored in five tournaments, he has only eight goals in 20 World Cup appearances. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s 118-goal tally in international fixtures is a world record for men, but the player will have to wait and see for the next game whether he’ll start if things take a turn.

The Portuguese are through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after thrashing the swiss 6-1 at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night. Portugal manager Fernando Santos made a drastic change ahead of the game by dropping captain Cristiano Ronaldo. His brave decision was rewarded as the replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a brilliant hat-trick to take the game away from the Swiss.

Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro, and Rafael Leao also found the back of the net, while Manuel Akanji pulled one back for Switzerland. Portugal multiplied their tally in the 33rd minute when Pepe, who was captaining the team in Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, towered above the Switzerland defense to head in from a corner kick. Pepe’s involvement in the tournament has been monumental, considering his age. Portugal will face Morocco in the quarter-finals after they defeated Spain on penalties.
