Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo‘s parents decided on his name because they were fans of the US President back in February 1985. Cristiano Ronaldo’s name came from his parents’ love for former US President Ronald Reagan. Ronaldo was born on February 5, 1985. Reagan had been sworn in for his second term in the White House a month before Ronaldo’s birth.
The Portuguese star, whose full name is Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, was born in Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira. He is the fourth child of Maria Dolores dos Santos Viveiros da Aveiro and José Dinis Aveiro, who were both keen on Reagan. Reagan went into politics with the Republican Party after a career in film and television. And it appears Ronaldo owes his now-famous name to the former US president.
Back in 2016 in an interview, Ronaldo was asked about the origin of his name. Talking about it, Ronaldo said, “My parents named me after Ronald Reagan because they both liked this name. And they thought it sounded strong. I know that my father admired him.”
Ronaldo’s father José used to play football for Madeira club Andorinha alongside Fernao Barros Sousa. In the Goal documentary, ‘Cristiano Ronaldo: The Making Of’, Ronaldo’s godfather revealed how the baptism very nearly did not happen. And it was all reportedly because of football. Sousa reportedly said, “That day, Andorinha were playing in Ribera Brava, so I was going there, Dinis as well, and we arrived much later at the baptism, so late that the priest didn’t want to baptise him! We had to convince the priest to baptise him. And that’s what happened.”
Sousa also talked about the story of Reagan. He suggested it was Cristiano’s mother’s idea. Sousa said, “There are stories from his mother that the name is because of Ronald Reagan. He was president of the USA at that time. His mother liked him and it seems that’s why they gave him the name Cristiano Ronaldo.” Reagan served as US president from 1981 to 1989. George Bush Sr. was his successor.
Ronaldo started playing football for his dad’s local team Andorinha. His talents saw him move to Sporting Lisbon. And eventually on to United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Ronaldo, a father of five, currently lives with his family in Saudi Arabia. He now plays for a Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s $18.5 million loft apartment in New York
Cristiano Ronaldo has bought a luxury apartment in New York for a staggering $ 18.5 million (£ 11.8 million). The Ex-Real Madrid star purchased a 2,509 sq ft loft in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, the New York Post has reported.
The exclusive apartment, which reportedly inspired the setting of the novel ‘50 Shades of Grey‘, belonged to Alessandro Proto, an Italian real-estate tycoon. Proto is also the business partner of the owner and ex-US President Donald Trump.
According to reports, the loft was built in 1983. And world-renowned designer Juan Pablo Molyneux created its interiors. A source told the New York Post that E.L. James, the author of ’50 Shades of Grey’, was inspired by the luxurious surroundings of the apartment to create the novel’s notorious bachelor pad owned by the lead character, Christian Grey.
The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom apartment is situated on 5th Avenue, 56th Street and is ‘regarded as one of Manhattan’s most prestigious and secure’ places to live. It ‘boasts spectacular panoramic views of Central Park to the north, sweeping west to the Hudson River, and then south with breathtaking views of Manhattan’s most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Freedom Tower.’ Trump Tower residents have access to a large fitness center, in-house valet services and the building’s restaurant, bar and shops.
