Andre Onana has been under fire lately due to his poor form. The Cameroonian keeper has committed many mistakes that have cost Manchester United points in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. As Onana and United failed to keep a clean sheet yet again, a former player posted a cryptic tweet.
David de Gea, United’s No. 1 in the previous season, posted a cryptic tweet after the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Newcastle United. The tweet was just a single cold face emoji, which garnered 10.6 Million views and 109 thousand likes. Dani Lorenzo, a streamer who plays for de Gea’s Esports team replied with a side-eye emoji, to which the Spanish goalkeeper replied with a GIF of the popular Anime character, Naruto, in the cold.
Fans in the replies theorized what the cryptic tweet could mean. Many thought this tweet was in response to his successor’s poor form, who is already under fire by United fans. Others were shocked the keeper would post anything like this, double checking if it was a parody account.
David de Gea’s contract ran out in June 2023 and he was released by Manchester United. Since then he has not joined any other club but still resides in Manchester. Throughout the summer many clubs have approached him for his services, but it looks like none of them came to fruition.
Will David de Gea sign for any club soon?
David de Gea is currently a free agent, but religiously trains to showcase potential suitors that he’s ready to play. Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain and many more European teams considered signing the 33-year-old, but it looks like there has been no further news from there.
Clubs from the Saudi, like Al Nassr and Al Hilal, had approached the keeper, but he rejected their offers. Many reports claim that money is not a factor for the Spaniard keeper, who aims to play in Europe. A report from The Sun claimed his former club, Manchester United, are interested in signing him on a short-term basis. This rumor has developed as Onana is set to participate in the African Cup of Nations since January.
The Guardian claims that if de Gea does not get any offers from a European club that could challenge for any major trophies, he could consider retirement. If he does retire, he will retire with an illustrious career. He also owns the Rebels Gaming– esports team.
