“Did any of them release gas?”- Fans react to Germany’s unique protest while taking the team Photo in 2022 FIFA World Cup opener against Japan

The hosts Qatar has been under the radar leading up to the most coveted 2022 FIFA World Cup for their human rights issues and also the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community in their country. Countries like England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark were among the ones who wear willing to wear the OneLove armbands during their World Cup matches.
They recently ripped off their choices as FIFA pressurized them to not continue with their decision and also threatened to book them if they still would wear the bands. However, today before the match between Germany and Japan, German players covered their mouths for the team photo as a suggestion that they have been silenced by FIFA.
The German players warmed up in training shirts with rainbow-colored sleeves and the German FA also tweeted before the match saying, “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect. Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard.”

Some of the fans were questioning Germany’s decision and were confused why they chose to do this before their first match. Some fans appeared still confused as they don’t know about the context of this incident. Some fans even joked about the fact that any one of the players must have farted during clicking the team photo.
Many were seen bashing Germany, bringing up their country’s history with human rights and also highlighting the history of their behavior with the Jews. Some even slammed them for their treatment of Africa in the past and termed them ‘hypocrites’ who are giving morals lesson to the world just as a show.
