USWNT (United States Women’s National Team) crashed out of the World Cup after a loss in the knockout stages. The team lost on penalties to Sweden, who beat them 5-4.  The USWNT’s aim of winning the World Cup three times in a row was shattered by Sweden. One star receiving a lot of flak over her performance was USWNT’s winger, Megan Rapinoe.

Megan Rapinoe was subbed on in the extra time for Alex Morgan. Rapinoe had a disastrous performance, as she was ineffective in her game. She missed out on good deliveries from the set-pieces and capped off the display with a missed penalty kick in the shootout, where eventually the USWNT lost.

The loss was shocking to the whole of the USA. This is the first time USWNT was knocked out of the World Cup before the semi-finals. The loss feels worse when it is revealed that the winning penalty by Sweden was just millimeters inside the goal. Sweden has been the bane for the USWNT as they previously knocked them out of the Rio Olympics as well.

Rapinoe’s performance was abysmal and fans were furious after seeing her actions after the penalty. Rapinoe appeared to be smiling after sending her kick into the stands. Rapinoe was later inconsolable after the loss. This was Rapinoe’s last game of her professional career and it ended in an agonizing loss.

Although the exit was unceremonious, Megan Rapinoe will go down in history as an all-time great for the USWNT. She has won the World Cup twice and also is an Olympic gold medallist. Rapinoe is a trailblazer and was instrumental in getting equal pay to the women’s game. She will remain an iconic figure in the world of football for her exploits on and off the field.
