Borussia Dortmund lost the opportunity to win the Bundesliga after a limp performance against FSV Mainz 05. The Black and Yellows were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz, having needed a win to become the champions of Germany.
Dortmund began the day two points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the table. A win would ensure they win the title for the first time since 2012. They would have a reason for confidence going into the game, having been in excellent form recently. They were unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga games. Meanwhile, Mainz had struggled to get points in recent weeks, having lost four games back-to-back.
However, their past results did not matter on a sunny day at Signal Iduna Park. Andreas Hanche-Olsen gave the away side a shock lead in the 15th minute with a header from the left side of the six-yard box into the bottom corner. Dortmund had a chance to respond moments later, as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Raphael Guerreiro.
Mainz goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was not to be beaten, though, as he saved a weak penalty from Sebastian Haller. Five minutes later, it went from bad to worse for Dortmund, as Karim Onisiwo was left completely unmarked in the box and capitalised with an accurate header. The home side came back fighting in the second half, with goals from Guerreiro and Niklas Sule, but it was not enough
Fans react to Borussia Dortmund losing out on Bundesliga title
Bayern Munich did their job by performing professionally to beat FC Koln 2-1. They also had a goal disallowed, but it didn’t matter, as they only needed to win to ensure the title.
This is the first time Borussia Dortmund have managed to come within touching distance of eclipsing Bayern since the famous Jurgen Klopp side of 2011/12. However, it was so close yet so far, as Bayern were crowned champions for the 11th consecutive season.
