Julian Alvarez‘s recent performances have social media fans comparing the South American to his Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland with claims of the Argentine being a better all-round player than the Norwegian.
Since joining Manchester City in 2022, the Argentine has started playing more regularly than was initially expected. When Erling Haaland was signed in the summer of 2022, it raised doubts about Julian Alvarez’s position in the starting XI. However, since the start of the 23/24 season, some fans think that the Argentine, while not as prolific a goalscorer, is a better all-around player based on his recent performances.
Fans online claim that the World Cup winner may not score as many as his Norwegian teammate but is overall better in every other sense of the game. Some have refuted this, stating that Erling’s innate goalscoring talent is on another level. Saying that he would be a guaranteed starter in every other team in the world.
Fans apart, Pep Guardiola has heaped praises for the young Julian Alvarez. “With the injury to Kevin, he has his chance and he is using it. Now he is almost undroppable,” the Spanish gaffer said.
While fans might argue who is better, Manchester City is fortunate to have two youngsters who are arguably already at a World-Class level. So, they might want to enjoy both of them rather than picking either.
Julian Alvarez has proven to be a starter in this Manchester City side
Julian Alvarez only started 13 games in the Premier League last season. Erling Haaland was generally preferred over the Argentine. Also, with the likes of İlkay Gündoğan, Kevin De Bruyne, and Rodri in midfield, the player was never going to breakthrough into the midfield.
Since the start of the 2023/24 season however, with Gundogan leaving for FC Barcelona and De Bruyne picking up an injury, Julian Alvarez was gifted with a golden opportunity to prove himself. Now, he is shining! With seven starts in seven Premier League games, he has 3 goals and 3 assists. Alvarez has taken the opportunity by the scruff of the neck scoring and assisting for fun.
He is now deemed ‘undroppable’ by Pep Guardiola. Also, with De Bruyne out for a few months, it just helps Julian Alvarez’s case. Further, he has exceeded the initial expectations. The Argentine has established himself as a starter in a team where he would usually be a bench warmer.
