Inter Milan thrashed arch-rivals AC Milan in 2-0 victory in the UCL semifinal first leg. The first Milan Derby in UCL since 2005 saw Rafael Leão miss out for the Rossoneri through injury. While Inter benched midfield talisman Marcelo Brozović.
Edin Džeko stunned Stefano Pioli’s side in the eighth minute with a volley from Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s corner to record his first goal in the Derby della Madonnina. Inter doubled their lead when the hosts’ defense allowed Henrikh Mkhitaryan the freedom to fire a low drive past Mike Maignan just three minutes later.
Çalhanoğlu almost laid siege to Milan’s goal for a third time with a long-range effort that bounced back off Maignan’s left-hand post. Matters went from bad to worse for the previous year’s Serie A champions as Ismaël Bennacer limped out through injury just moments later. AC Milan were offered a reprieve when an initial penalty for Inter for Simon Kjær’s pull on Lautaro Martínez was overturned on a VAR review.
AC Milan started the second half brighter as Brahim Díaz sent a curling effort just past André Onana’s right-hand post before Junior Messias followed suit. Maignan was still the busier of the two goalkeepers as he had to thwart Džeko from doubling his tally after being played in by Alessandro Bastoni. Sandro Tonali went reportedly closest for Milan with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that rebounded back off the outside of Inter’s woodwork.
