It was one of the historic nights at Old Trafford as home underdogs, Manchester United defeated favorites, Barcelona in the second tie of the Round of 32 clash of the Europa League. Despite trailing 0-1 at the end of the first half, strikes from Fred and Antony helped the Red Devils bounce back and crush the Catalans 2-1 at the time of the full-time whistle.
The first half of the match saw Barcelona’s dominance as Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in the 18th minute helped the visitors take lead at Old Trafford. Although it was a soft penalty call and the decision could’ve gone either way when Bruno Fernandes fouled Balde, the decision gave the decision in Barcelona’s favor and awarded them a penalty. Lewandowski didn’t miss and as a result, Barcelona went 1-0 up.
However, fans and spectators witnessed a resurgent Manchester United in the second half when just two minutes after the second half, Fred equalized the scoreline after a beautiful strike to beat Marc Andre ter Stegan. From that moment onwards, the Red Devils never looked back and in the 73rd minute, Antony, who was brought in for Werghorst, scored from the right wing and gave Manchester United the lead.
However, it was not just because of a great attacking and mid-field that United was able to run the show. Crucial saves from David de Gea and last-minute ball clearance from Rafael Varane also helped United take hold of their lead till the very last moment.
