In one of the most one-sided matches of the season, Aston Villa dominated defending champions Manchester City to win 1-0. In a game that saw City manage only 2 shots in the entire 90 minutes, Leon Bailey’s strike in the 74th minute saw Villa win three important points.

Pep Guardiola‘s team was 3rd, trailing Arsenal by 6 points, and Villa was just a point behind. Despite expectations for a City win, Rodri’s suspension posed a challenge. In the game, Villa took 22 shots, 7 on target, highlighting City’s struggle without Rodri. The xG Philosophy on Twitter revealed City had 0.00 xG after the 11th minute, managing only 0.86 with two shots.

Although they completely dominated the match, Unai Emery’s men did find it hard to find the back of the net. They finally scored in the 74th minute after Bailey received the ball on the right flank after an unimpressive touch by Youri Tielemans. The winger dribbled towards the center, got past Josko Gvardiol and took a shot from outside the box. Unfortunately the ball took a deflection off of Ruben Dias which took it over Ederson, who was already off his line.

This win was Villa’s 14th consecutive home win in the Premier League, last being beaten 2-4 by Arsenal in February 2023. The win also means Villa have overtaken City in the points table going third while City drop to 4th.

Fans enamored by Aston Villa’s impressive victory over defending champions

Before the match started, many thought the game would be won by City despite not having Rodri. But all were proven wrong as Unai Emery’s men outclassed City with ease. Many mocked City for failing to win a game in 4 matches as well, with Guardiola becoming a target after City’s poor performance.
