Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-2 at home on Saturday as Thomas Tuchel began his Bayern managerial career with a win. The win also meant Bayern moved to the top of the Bundesliga table.

Borussia Dortmund was mostly to blame as their game was corrupted by mistakes. An early howler from their keeper Gregor Kobel gave Bayern the lead after he let the ball bounce away from the top of his feet and into the net.

Thomas Muller played the game of his life as he scored two goals in the first half. Kingsley Coman’s driving runs and crosses were also on display as he got his goal in the second half after Muller let the ball slide in between his feet to discombobulate the defenders. Emre Can later scored a penalty and Donyell Malen scored for Dortmund late in the match but to no effect. Bayern Munich held on to clinch the victory.

This was Thomas Tuchel’s first game as Bayern Munich manager after Julian Nagelsmann was sacked last month. The win meant Bayern Munich leapfrogged Borussia Dortmund as they moved to the top of the table. With eight games left to play in the season, Bayern currently stands two points ahead of their fierce rivals as they prepare for the final leg of the season.

Borussia Dortmund is chasing their first Bundesliga title since 2011. As for Bayern, they are looking to win their record 12th title in a row.

Dortmund play RB Leipzig next in a DFB Pokal tie. Bayern Munich will also be seen in DFB Pokal actions as they take on SC Freiburg. However, as far as the Bundesliga is concerned, with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, it now appears that the German club will be able to defend its league title this year as well.
