“Aging like fine wine; Inevitable” – Fans react as Cristiano Ronaldo brace propels Portugal to victory against Luxembourg
The Portuguese now has 23 more international goals than Lionel Messi.
Fans went wild as Cristiano Ronaldo scored another brace for Portugal against Luxembourg. This means Ronaldo extends his lead as the highest international goalscorer of all time, with 122 goals. The 6-0 victory puts Portugal at the top of their European Championships qualifying group, two points ahead of Slovakia.
Ronaldo put Portugal ahead in the ninth minute, converting from close range from Nuno Mendes’ header into the middle. Mendes did well at the back post to steer Bruno Fernandes’ cross into his path with some fine aerial work. Joao Felix doubled Portugal’s lead, before Bernardo Silva added a third. The Chelsea forward scored a superb header, placing the ball into the top-right corner from a perfect Silva cross. Bernardo also scored a header, this time into the far left corner via a Joao Palhinha cross.
Ronaldo bagged Portugal’s fourth and his second of the game with a simple finish inside the box. Felix won possession in the Luxembourg half and played the ball to Fernandes. He threaded the needle perfectly to release Ronaldo, who slotted his left-footed strike into the bottom left corner. Otavio scored the fifth in the second half with yet another header. AC Milan star Rafael Leao missed a penalty in the 85th minute. However, he made amends with a slightly scuffed strike into the bottom-left corner.
Cristiano Ronaldo broke yet another record by becoming the first player to score four international goals for a European team after turning 38. He received a yellow card before being substituted, but it was only a minor setback on a successful night.
