Federico Valverde almost signed for Arsenal for just £2.7m in 2014 before moving to Real Madrid: Reports

Arsene Wenger and Federico Valverde

Before Federico Valverde joined the LaLiga giants, it was said that Arsenal and his representatives had a “verbal agreement.” Having won two LaLiga championships and the Champions League since his 2016 transfer from Uruguayan club Penarol, the 24-year-old is a key player for Real Madrid under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

According to sources, things may have turned out very differently because former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger came close to signing the player before he joined Madrid. The rumour said that the club and Federico Valverde had verbally agreed following Valverde’s scouting by Francis Cagigao, who had also recommended the player to Wenger.

In December 2014, Valverde and his agent travelled to London so that he might spend time close to the Arsenal training facility, where it was rumoured that he had trained with the first squad.

Real Madrid took the right decision of signing Federico Valverde

The club, however, chose to defer making an offer, which turned out to be a terrible decision as he went on to shine in the South American U17 Championship in Paraguay shortly after. Real Madrid expressed interest after Valverde’s seven goals during the competition.

The midfielder had already been persuaded to choose Spain over the Premier League when the Gunners made their move with a £2.7 million bid, but it was too late. The 24-year-old has ten goals in 157 games since joining Madrid and has emerged as one of Europe’s best prospects.

As it quickly became apparent that they lacked depth in the middle of the field, Liverpool was extensively connected with a transfer for Valverde over the summer. According to reports in Spain, Jurgen Klopp‘s team reportedly had an £85 million approach for the playmaker rejected.
