Former Aston Villa player John Carew to serve 14 months prison sentence for tax evasion

Former Aston Villa player John Carew has been accused and found guilty of tax evasion and hence has been punished with a penalty of 14 months of jail time. He didn’t disclose his income and assets abroad to Norwegian authorities and failed to pay the taxes although the player later confirmed that he knew nothing about the situation.
He has received a hefty fine of about £45,353 for this tax fraud incident after unintentionally failing to disclose his income at the Oslo District Court. His fine would have been double if the court would have found out that the player intentionally tricked the authorities and avoided paying his taxes.
During the judgment, district court judge Ingvild Boe Hornburg said, “According to the evidence presented, the court cannot see that there is a cover for Carew’s decision not to disclose his income and assets, even if the description of the offense was thereby fulfilled. In the court’s view, there is nothing in the evidence that supports such a hypothesis.”
What did John Carew say about this incident?
John Carew has exclaimed that he didn’t know anything about the tax fraud and that his actions were based on the advice given by his lawyer friend and ex-agent Per A. Flod. He also said that those advices led him not to disclose his income and assets and also said that he was “controlled as a puppet”.
He also said, “I trusted him blindly. I have been convinced that he was right. He controlled me almost like a puppet. I understand that it is grossly negligent of me to trust him so much, but that is why I have done it.” Although the prosecution said that Carew was given a lot of chances to correct his mistake but he chose not to make the corrections.
