Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez might turn up playing for Argentina giants River Plate next season: Reports
Luis Suarez (Atletico Madrid)
Luis Suarez’s transfer to River Plate is expected to be announced on Monday. Direct TV journalist Bruno Vain claimed that the information came from ‘the best possible source’ and that the announcement would be made official within the next few hours.
Luis Suarez’s future may be closer than ever to a happy ending. Several teams have expressed interest in his services since Atletico confirmed his departure. Even Barcelona considered bringing the striker back to Camp Nou but decided against it because they want Robert Lewandowski to lead the line.
River Plate was one of the clubs that expressed interest, albeit in a very informal manner. Transferring to the Argentine club seemed virtually impossible, owing primarily to financial constraints. If he joins El Monumental, he will be the natural replacement for Julian Alvarez, who left for Manchester City.

Luis Suarez’s move to River Plate makes a lot of sense to both the parties
River Plate are looking to bolster its attack in preparation for the National League and the Copa Libertadores. River have made an offer to Suarez and are now confident of getting a deal over the line, with the former Barcelona striker set to reject a number of offers from Europe in favour of a return to South America.
Suarez recorded his lowest goal tally in a La Liga season last year, netting just 11 times in 35 appearances for Atletico. His previous lowest was 16, which he managed in both his first and last year with Barcelona.
With competition for minutes fierce in Uruguay set up, Darwin Nunez, Edinson Cavani, Maxi Gomez and Agustin Alvarez are all looking for a spot at the World Cup – Suarez is keen to play regular football to ensure he remains in manager Diego Alonso’s thoughts.
Suarez was left out of the Uruguay squad for the recent internationals, although the country’s FA cited both fitness reasons and the striker’s search for a new club as reasons for his omission. River Plate are also set to lose young midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who has snubbed Wolves’ advances in favour of a move to Benfica.
