From external borrowing to adding more sponsors: What all is Barcelona doing to bring back Lionel Messi?

Barcelona is reportedly in contact with a number of external sponsors who might contribute to the cost of Lionel Messi’s return to Camp Nou. Messi left the club in summer 2021 for PSG on a free transfer.

The Catalan club has admitted to being interested in bringing back their former talisman back to Spain since the start of the current season. Efforts are being made by the Blaugrana to find a way to re-sign Lionel Messi without breaking Financial Fair Play rules. To make the move feasible, Barcelona must find a way to gain commercial profits through which the Argentine’s base salary would be supplemented.

Barca is said to be confident in completing the move and bringing the Argentine back to the club he is most associated with. With the Blaugrana, Messi has won 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.

Barcelona are set to have a busy summer as they look to boost their squad for next season. President Joan Laporta has revealed that the club’s main objective for next season is to focus on European competitions.

To do so, Barcelona are targeting various talents across Europe which include Vitor Roque, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Marco Asensio. Barcelona are also looking to offload some players including Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia.

Barcelona currently sit at the top of the La Liga table, nine points clear of their arch rivals Real Madrid. Their luck in European competitions, however, has not been great as of late. They were demoted to the Europa League after they finished third in their group in the Champions League group stage. This led to Manchester United knocking them out in the Europa League play-off round in February.
