Gabriel Jesus has been a vital part of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal since joining in the summer of 2022. Replacing the outgoing Alexander Lacazette, the Brazilian was purchased by the Gunners for £45 million. Although he started his season well, Jesus struggled to do the one thing strikers are supposed to do, score goals.
The Brazilian forward has scored 16 goals in 46 appearances for the Gunners. In the 34 matches he has played in the Premier League for Arsenal, he has had 18 big chances missed, with 12 goals. Although he contributes in ways apart from goals, his weakness is scoring goals.
So it would make sense that Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar would search for a new striker for the club. But Jesus is not worried about this. In a recent interview, when asked what he thinks about Arsenal’s interest in strikers, Jesus said:
So here, I don’t care about this. I know my qualities and I know what I can bring to the team. I can score and I can also help with other things, like opening spaces. But the only people who can see it are those who watch the game and understand. Those who don’t understand we will say that: ‘Oh he didn’t score today’. But maybe I run and open space for someone and, let’s be honest, I don’t miss a lot of chances.
Arsenal are linked to Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Napoli’s Victor Osiemhen. While Toney is currently serving a ban for 262 betting charges from the FA, but will return in January. Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen has just returned to training from injury, missing over a month of football. He has scored 6 goals in 12 games this season.
Thierry Henry “loves” Gabriel Jesus after his performance against RC Lens
In their 5th match of the UEFA Champions League, Gabriel Jesus and Co. completely dismantled RC Lens, with the Gunners scoring 6 goals. Gabriel Jesus was instrumental to the win, as the Brazilian was part of the build-up to Arsenal’s first goal and scored just a few minutes later.
After the game, Henry praised the striker’s performance on CBS Sports during the Champions League coverage. He particularly liked how the striker skillfully avoided a defender and scored. Henry mentioned a similar move against Manchester United, highlighting the player’s importance to the team. He hopes the Brazilian striker could reach 20-25 goals but emphasized that the player’s overall contribution is excellent for the team.
I just love this. He did it against Manchester United, I don’t know if you remember on the break. Gabriel Jesus is a very important player for us.
In the 2023/24 season, Gabriel Jesus has scored 5 goals in 13 appearances in all competitions, with 4 coming in the Champions League. He has struggled with injuries as well, missing the start of the season with a knee injury and then another hamstring injury in October.
