“Boys gave their best again,” Graham Potter takes full responsibility for Chelsea’s PL loss against Aston Villa
Graham Potter takes the blame after Chelsea loss
Chelsea manager Graham Potter took responsibility for his team’s defensive mishaps in their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. The English coach acknowledged his team’s poor defending, which allowed Ollie Watkins to score an easy goal early on in the match. A mistake from Marc Cucurella and John McGinn’s thumping effort from outside the box cost the Blues all 3 points.
Chelsea dominated the match stats and had the possibility of securing the win or at least getting a draw but failed to convert their chances. They have lacked a clinical presence in front of the goal as reflected in their current position, a disappointing 11th. “The stats are positive, I think the team game everything, the intention was there. I’m responsible for the result, the boys gave their best again”, he said.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager was greeted with jeers and whistles from the Chelsea fans. Despite the ongoing struggles, Potter looks to have complete backing from the Chelsea board. However, fans are losing their patience after disappointing performances from their star-studded side. His career is now hanging by a thread and The 47-year-old Englishman must turn things around at Stamford Bridge to escape the heat he has been facing from fans and pundits alike for Chelsea’s woes. The coach must replicate the football in his Brighton days to regain their trust.
Chelsea faces Liverpool next in the Premier League on Wednesday and with just 10 matches remaining, it is highly unlikely for the Blues to secure a Champions League spot. However, a European place is still possible if they get back to winning ways.

Graham Potter tipped to be sacked by Chelsea after Aston Villa loss
Graham Potter has had his odds slashed by the bookmakers to become the next Premier League manager sacked after Chelsea lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. The manager oversaw his first loss in five games but the defeat left his side in the bottom half, still without a win against a team that started the day above them in the league. Meanwhile, fan favorite Thomas Tuchel went top of the Bundesliga in Germany with Bayern Munich, rubbing salt in the wounds.
Potter has already been under immense pressure at Chelsea but had briefly settled things with a run of three successive wins before the international break. The late 2-2 draw with Everton put his future in the air once more though and this was not the response the head coach was after. The supporters booed and whistled the Chelsea squad while a large portion had already left at halftime.
The replacements lined up if Graham Potter steps down as the manager includes Mauricio Pochettino, Julian Nagelsmann, Zinedine Zidane, Davis Moyes and Brendan Rodgers. Now it remains to be seen whether Todd Boehly continues to give Potter chances after their record spending in the winter.
