“He never has a gesture for fans,” Former PSG star explains why Lionel Messi shouldn’t extend contract with the French club

35-year-old Lionel Messi is near the end of his two-year contract with French side Paris Saint Germain. PSG are reportedly looking forward to extend the 7-time-Balon d’Or winner’s contract with the club. However, a formal agreement has not been reached yet. Meanwhile, former PSG player Jerome Rothen shockingly told Messi to leave once his contract expires.
The ex-French International player claimed Lionel Messi’s salary is too high. He said that releasing Messi would help spread the investment across the squad. Jerome Rothen criticized Lionel Messi for his lack of engagement with the fans. “Never thanks the fans, he lowers his head and goes to the dressing room”. Rothen told RMC Sport, “Messi’s renewal is a joke.”
“I see PSG trapped in financial fair play because what they have to pay in wages has exploded. Now they will have the opportunity to recover a huge sum with Messi’s salary, this could allow them to hire and improve the squad.” Rothen continued, “In terms of image and what it reflects, I can’t understand why Messi wants to extend the adventure here. Even when he celebrates goals and his name is chanted, he never has a gesture for the fans to thank them for their support. He further stated that he believes it is a ‘bad idea’ for Lionel Messi to continue with the French squad.

Paris Saint Germain lost 2-1 to Olympique Marseille in the Round of 16 in the Coupe de France on Thursday. The PSG number 7 Kylian Mbappe was missing from the squad, and fans had hoped that World Cup winner Messi and Neymar Jr would display their magic. However, fans were frustrated as the duo failed to register a single shot on target. Neymar Jr assisted Sergio Ramos’ header in the first half to equalize against Alexis Sanchez’s 31st minute goal.
Without their star player Kylian Mbappe in the squad, PSG only managed three shots on target. The 2018 World Cup winner was out with an injury during PSG’s 3-1 Ligue 1 victory against Montpellier last week. Paris Saint Germain face Ligue 1 side Monaco on February 11, before their Champions League clash against German giants Bayern Munich on February 15.
